Devoshay A. Adams, a 30-year-old Black man, was shot in the abdomen in Elmira, New York, in the early hours of October 29, 2017. Police found him at a residence on the 400 block of West Gray Street shortly before 4 a.m.; he was taken to a local hospital and later died of his injuries.
Investigators identified 27-year-old Marquis L. McKinney as a suspect. A Chemung County grand jury indicted McKinney in late December 2017 on second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned in January 2018 and held in the Chemung County Jail. His trial began in June 2018 and, after jury deliberation, a Chemung County Court jury returned a not guilty verdict on all charges in early August 2018, leaving Adams’s death legally unresolved.
The Elmira Police Department has asked the public for any information about the shooting. If anyone knew Devoshay Adams or has information that could help the investigation, please come forward.
