Esteban Alvarado-Bonilla, 29, was fatally shot inside El Campesino deli in Central Islip, New York, on the morning of January 30, 2017. The shooting happened about 10:30 a.m. Authorities said members of MS-13 targeted him after mistaking his Peyton Manning jersey bearing the number 18 for a sign he belonged to the rival 18th Street gang.
Mario Aguilar-Lopez, an MS-13 member from the Sailors Locos Salvatruchas Westside clique, entered the deli and shot Alvarado-Bonilla multiple times from behind. A stray bullet also struck a female deli employee; her injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. Alvarado-Bonilla, a Brentwood resident, was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore and pronounced dead.
Several arrests followed, including the shooter, the getaway driver Jose Suarez, and the clique leader Alexi Saenz, known as Blasty; prosecutions related to the attack were underway.
