Joshua Guzman was 15 when he was found fatally shot in a street gutter at the intersection of Linden and Laurel avenues in Hempstead, New York, in the early hours of September 12, 2016. His father, Raul Guzman, learned of the death after calling Joshua’s cellphone and having it answered by a police detective. Joshua’s mother was hospitalized from a car accident at the time. A sophomore at Uniondale High School, he was remembered as a cherished student and a valued member of the school community.
Authorities linked his killing to a rise in gang-related violence in the area and said Joshua may have been targeted after refusing pressure to join gangs. Investigators reported the murder was ordered by a gang leader who sent members to lure Joshua out that night; federal prosecutors later described the motive as the gang viewing Joshua as disrespectful. Several defendants in the broader racketeering case pleaded guilty in connection with the enterprise, and prosecutions in the long-running investigation continued.
Did anyone in Uniondale or Hempstead know Joshua’s routines or have information about that night that could shed more light on what happened?
