On the evening of June 28, 2016, 28-year-old Juan Medina was standing on the porch of a multi-residence building on Park Avenue in Monticello, New York, when a man approached and opened fire. Medina was struck multiple times and was found deceased in the doorway when Monticello Police arrived. Witnesses described the shooter fleeing the scene; several agencies, including the New York State Police, assisted the investigation.
Investigators focused on a domestic dispute tied to Medina’s recent involvement with the estranged wife of a Monticello resident, 24-year-old Carlos Serrano. Serrano — also known as Carlos Serrano Valentine and Jay Menor Serrano — was arrested within hours and later indicted on second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and reckless endangerment. At trial, witness testimony, including from Serrano’s estranged wife, and text messages about his anger regarding another man near his son were presented. A jury found Serrano guilty on all counts and a judge sentenced him to 25 years to life for Medina’s murder, with concurrent terms on the other counts.
Did anyone in the area see Juan or the porch that night who can add details about what happened before the shooting?
