James E. Kohl, Jr., was 35 when he died from a gunshot wound in Plattsburgh, New York, on July 5, 2015. He is remembered for his sense of humor and his devotion to family; he was a husband and father at the time of his death.

Kohl was with a friend who was helping law enforcement search for two escaped prisoners. That friend was carrying a firearm for protection, and the weapon discharged accidentally. The single bullet struck Kohl, producing a fatal injury.
