On the night of June 29, 2015, 19-year-old Lesean Gause was standing outside the Zaid Food Mart in Schenectady, New York, when gunfire erupted shortly after 11:00 p.m. A stray bullet struck him in the chest; he managed to reach the convenience store before collapsing. Emergency responders took him to Ellis Hospital, where he died about an hour later, just nine days shy of his twentieth birthday.
Investigators determined Gause was not the intended target; the shooters had been aiming at someone else near the store. Gause had graduated from Schenectady High School in 2013 and planned to attend Schenectady County Community College. His mother remembered him as a football fan who had worked at Burger King and Hannaford.
Three people were arrested in connection with the shooting: Myliek Lebron, then 23; Kasheef James, then 16; and 20-year-old Joshua Sayles. Lebron was convicted of murder and later received a sentence of 25 years to life. James, identified as the person who fired the weapon, was acquitted of murder but convicted of manslaughter and weapon possession and sentenced to 20 to 30 years. The outcome for Sayles was not clearly detailed.
Did anyone who knew Lesean or was in the area that night see something that could add detail to what happened?
