Wayne Best Jr. was 25 when he was shot and killed on December 9, 2014, in front of his Parkwood Boulevard home in Schenectady, New York. The shooting, carried out during an attempted robbery, struck Best in the chest and ended a life remembered by family and friends for BMX biking, skateboarding, and lacrosse.
Investigators determined the robbery had been arranged by a friend. Three men were arrested: Todd Macon, Christopher Johnson, and Troy Saunders (also known as Mac or Jack). Prosecutors say Macon, a Facebook friend who even attended Best’s funeral, remained in a getaway car while Saunders and Johnson carried out the robbery; Saunders is accused of firing the fatal shot. Macon and Johnson entered plea deals and testified against Saunders. Johnson pleaded guilty to robbery and received 12½ years; Macon testified and received a 15-year sentence.
Saunders represented himself at trial. In February 2017 a jury convicted him of first-degree murder, robbery, weapons charges, and conspiracy, and he was sentenced to life without parole. Does anyone have memories of Wayne or information about the case that could add detail to the timeline?
