Cheryl Spengler, 67, was killed inside her Lake Road home in Webster, New York, in the pre-dawn hours of December 24, 2012. Investigators determined she died from a gunshot wound to the head and also found evidence of blunt force trauma; her body was discovered in the charred remains after her brother set the house on fire.
Her brother, 62-year-old William Spengler, deliberately set the house and a car on fire and then ambushed first responders who arrived after 5:30 a.m. He fatally shot volunteer firefighters Michael Chiapperini, 43, and Tomasz Kaczowka, 19, wounded two other firefighters and a police officer, and prevented crews from immediately fighting the blaze, which ultimately destroyed six other houses. William Spengler left a two-to-three-page typewritten note saying he intended to kill and later died at the scene of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a standoff with police.
Friends and neighbors reported a strained relationship between the siblings and said William had been close to their mother, who had died two months earlier; some suggested that loss affected his state of mind. He had a prior conviction for manslaughter in 1980 for the beating death of his 92-year-old grandmother and served 17 years in prison.
Did anyone in the community have information about the siblings relationship or warning signs before December 24, 2012?
