Deputy Kurt Wyman, 24, of the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office was killed after responding to a domestic disturbance in Knoxboro, New York. The call came in on the evening of June 6, 2011, and officers confronted 40-year-old Christian Patterson, who had barricaded himself in a garage and was armed with a shotgun. Negotiations lasted for hours into the early morning of June 7, when deputies moved to take Patterson into custody and he opened fire.
Wyman, a four-year veteran of the sheriff’s office and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, was struck by a single shot and later died at a nearby hospital. Patterson was shot during the exchange and taken into custody and was charged in connection with the deputy’s death. The community and law enforcement family were deeply affected by the loss.
