On Memorial Day, May 26, 2008, 19-year-old Robert Adams was fatally shot at the Central Islip Recreation Center in Islip, New York, during a large holiday gathering. Two other people were wounded in the same incident. Police described the shooting as tied to a feud between rival gangs rather than a random act.

Witness cooperation proved difficult at first; hundreds were present that day but many were reluctant to speak with investigators. Authorities later identified 19-year-old Lavelle Todd as a suspect in Adams’s death and located him in North Carolina, where he was arrested by U.S. Marshals and charged with second-degree murder. The first trial ended in a mistrial, and legal proceedings were ongoing as the community awaited final resolution.

If anyone who attended the recreation center that day or who knew Robert Adams has information that could help clarify what happened, please share what is known.
