Lorenzo McNeil, a 29-year-old Hispanic man, was killed during the final assault that ended the Attica Prison uprising on September 13, 1971. McNeil was serving a five to seven-year sentence for robbery when state troopers and correction officers retook the facility under heavy tear gas and unleashed thousands of rounds into the prison yard. He was struck in the head and died; autopsy findings later showed most deaths that day resulted from the armed assault by state forces.

No specific arrests or individual suspects were identified in McNeil’s killing; the scale and indiscriminate nature of the gunfire made accountability for each fatality difficult to establish. Official claims that inmates had killed the hostages were later disproven by medical examinations. Decades later a class-action settlement with the state provided compensation to survivors and families of those killed.
