On September 25, 2022, 24-year-old Wilmer Navarro of Mendota, California, was shot and killed around 3:30 a.m. on the 600 block of S. Kate Street. He and 47-year-old Jose Abrego-Guardado were both found with fatal gunshot wounds; investigators say the two knew one another but have not clarified the nature of their relationship.

Police believe there may have been a gathering at or near the scene, but it is unclear whether the victims had been inside a house or outside for an extended period when the shooting occurred. The Mendota Police Department called in the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office to lead the homicide inquiry, and detectives have asked nearby residents and businesses to check surveillance footage for vehicles or people in the area around the time of the shooting.
