Jose Padilla, 28, of Pomona, California, was shot and killed in the parking lot of the Claremont Lodge at 736 S. Indian Hill Blvd in Claremont on July 18, 2022. Officers arrived around 12:10 a.m. after reports of gunshots and found Padilla with multiple gunshot wounds; paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Investigators identified 45-year-old John Martinez of Pomona as the primary suspect. Martinez was located a short time later in West Covina and arrested without incident; he was booked on suspicion of murder and held on $4 million bail. The Los Angeles County District Attorney filed murder charges on July 19, and Martinez was arraigned the next day in Pomona Superior Court. Additional charges included possession of a controlled substance while in possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon, and a misdemeanor count of brandishing a weapon. Claremont Police said there were no other suspects and asked anyone with information to come forward.
