Luis Ramirez was a 28-year-old resident of Athens, CA, who died on June 13, 2022, after a violent assault in an alleyway. He was found that evening with multiple traumatic injuries and died shortly after being taken to a nearby hospital.
Eyewitnesses reported a group fleeing the scene, and police identified several suspects. Brandon Piekarsky, Derrick Donchak, and Colin Walsh were arrested and charged in connection with the killing. Prosecutors described the attack as motivated by racial animosity and pursued hate crime enhancements; testimony at trial included eyewitness accounts and forensic evidence about the assault and the use of racial slurs.
The case prompted broader scrutiny of the local police department after allegations emerged that some officers obstructed the investigation; federal indictments against certain officers were part of that inquiry. The killing sparked vigils, protests, and renewed calls in the community for accountability and stronger protections against hate-motivated violence.
If anyone knew Luis, saw the alley that night, or has information relevant to the investigation, please come forward.
