Erick Boliver Mendez Vasquez, 33, of San Rafael, California, was fatally shot on June 4, 2022, in the Canal neighborhood. He had been drinking with a group near the corner of Mill Street and Medway Road when the group was attacked by suspected gang members in an apparent retaliatory strike for an earlier altercation. Mendez Vasquez was not believed to be involved in gang activity. Firefighters transported him to a hospital, where he later died.

Investigators linked 23-year-old Alan Esturado Aceitu Perez of Novato to the shooting through surveillance footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence, including a firearm recovered after police responded to gang graffiti. Perez was arrested and held at the Marin County Jail; he later pleaded guilty to the murder in September 2024 and was sentenced on January 23, 2025. Six other people were also arrested and convicted on charges connected to the attack, including assault, unlawfully carrying concealed firearms, and vandalism.
