On the evening of May 26, 2022, 40-year-old Riverbank resident Chava Salvador Ramos was shot in the parking lot of an Applebee’s on Claribel Road. Deputies from the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office found Ramos about 9:45 PM with multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds; he was taken to a nearby hospital, had surgery, and died later that night.

The shooting followed a dispute that began inside the restaurant’s bar area and escalated outside into the parking lot while the restaurant was crowded with families celebrating recent graduations. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing people run. Deputies located a vehicle connected to the incident near Oakdale Road and Sylvan Avenue; a high-risk stop near Peppermint Drive led to the detention of 28-year-old Jonathan Alexander Ray of Modesto, who was found with a firearm and booked on charges of homicide and assault with a deadly weapon. Investigators reviewed surveillance footage and interviewed witnesses; authorities said they believed Ray acted alone and identified no additional suspects.

Did anyone who was at the Applebee’s that night see the dispute start or have footage from the parking lot that could help piece together what happened?
