Ivan Garcia Olivera, 26, of Victorville, California, was shot and killed on May 3, 2022, in a sparsely populated area near the 32400 block of Jiggs Road in Barstow, south of Hinkley Road and west of the railroad tracks. Deputies responded to a report that three men riding quads had been assaulted; Garcia Olivera was found with a gunshot wound and died at the scene. Two other men, ages 32 and 35 and from Phelan, were injured but survived.

An arrest was made nearly eight months later: 35-year-old John Douglas Gallaher of Lucerne Valley was taken into custody on January 18, 2023, at a residence in the 30500 block of Sutter Road. He was booked on charges including murder, attempted murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and vehicle theft, with bail set at just over $2 million. It is not known whether the victims had any prior connection to Gallaher, and authorities have not released details about the evidence that led to the arrest.
