Robert Steven Jones, 51, of Discovery Bay, California, died on March 22, 2022, after an encounter with Contra Costa County deputies who responded to a domestic disturbance on the 8000 block of Westport Circle. Deputies say Jones first brandished a knife and then an Umarex AirJavelin archery rifle. After multiple commands to disarm, Jones allegedly advanced toward officers, who retreated, established a perimeter, and ultimately fired when he continued to approach. Jones was struck and later died at a hospital.
A coroner’s inquest jury determined Jones’ death was caused by another person and was not accidental. The County District Attorney completed a legal review and concluded the deputies’ use of deadly force was necessary and lawful, finding they acted in self-defense and defense of others; no charges were filed. The case record specifies the archery rifle can propel arrows at high speeds.
Are there witnesses or neighbors who can add details about what happened at the Westport Circle residence that day?
