James Foley, a resident of Markleeville, California, was found dead on his front porch on December 23, 2021, after suffering multiple gunshot wounds. Deputies from the Alpine County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shots fired call that Thursday night at the Sierra Pines Mobile Home Park along Highway 89 between Woodfords and Markleeville and discovered Foley’s body.
In connection with the shooting, 49-year-old Christopher Joseph Torok was taken into custody by Alpine County deputies and arrested at about 9 p.m. Torok is being held without bail on one count of felony murder. Authorities say no one else was injured and that there is no ongoing threat to the community; the investigation remains active and officials have made no further public comments.
The community is described as shocked by Foley’s death and residents are seeking answers about motive and circumstances. If anyone has information about Foley, the scene at Sierra Pines, or the events of December 23, 2021, please come forward.
