Leopoldo Rodriguez, 65, was found dead outside his Oroville, California, home on December 19, 2021, after Butte County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported shooting in the Thermalito area. He suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head and investigators noted multiple bullet holes in the house, including the front window.

Surveillance footage captured a man in a puffy jacket and cowboy boots fleeing the scene. Two days later, a report of a stolen vehicle led investigators to identify 42-year-old Oroville resident Zachary Hutcheson as the person in the video. A search warrant at Hutcheson’s residence located a semi-automatic handgun; forensic testing tied cartridges from the murder scene to that firearm and Hutcheson was arrested and charged with Rodriguez’s murder. Court filings state Hutcheson pleaded no contest and faced a sentence of 25 years to life.
