Ivan Rivera, a 40-year-old resident of Vista, California, was killed in a double shooting on November 17, 2021, in San Marcos. Deputies responded about 7 p.m. to La Rosa Drive, a cul-de-sac off South Rancho Santa Fe Road, and found Rivera and another man with gunshot wounds. Rivera was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering multiple gunshot wounds; the other man was taken to a hospital in critical condition and remained hospitalized for some time.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Homicide Unit is handling the investigation. No suspects have been publicly identified and the motive has not been determined. A survivor who later spoke about the attack said an assailant dressed in black and wearing a COVID mask emerged from bushes and opened fire, allowing the survivor to escape; he later learned his cousin Ivan had been killed.
