Chris Sgouromitis, 60, was killed during an armed robbery at his convenience store, the Outpost Market in Cathedral City, California, on February 21, 2021. Officers arrived after multiple 911 calls around 9:15 p.m. and found Sgouromitis suffering from gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators identified two 19-year-old men, Charles Lamar Campbell and Joel Ortiz-Hidalgo, as suspects. Police say Campbell was the shooter and Ortiz-Hidalgo the getaway driver. Community tips and security video from the store are reported to have helped lead to their arrests. Both men were charged with first-degree murder, attempted robbery and the special circumstance of killing during the course of a robbery; Campbell faced additional firearm-related accusations. They pleaded not guilty and proceedings continued in Riverside County Superior Court.
Sgouromitis was a father of four and the owner of a well-known local business; the community mourned his death.
