Lovell Lee Johnson, 27, of Fountain Valley, was shot and killed in the early hours of December 9, 2020, at an apartment complex at 62 N. San Mateo St., Redlands. Police responded to reports of shots fired around 3:30 a.m. and found Johnson unresponsive in a carport; paramedics performed CPR but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators determined Johnson died from gunshot wounds. Surveillance video showed a gold Chevrolet Monte Carlo leaving the scene; that vehicle was registered to 31-year-old Guadalupe Peter Gonzales of San Bernardino. A law enforcement bulletin led to the car being located and stopped near the Texas–New Mexico line, and Gonzales was arrested on suspicion of murder after detectives from Redlands interviewed him. Evidence recovered from the vehicle was linked to the shooting and Gonzales was being held in Las Cruces, New Mexico, pending extradition to San Bernardino County.
