Mateo R. Lange, 22, of Oroville, California, was shot dead inside the apartment he shared with his wife, Jessica Nichols, on November 6, 2020. Officers called to the Grand Avenue complex that morning found his body; the death was treated as suspicious and the Oroville Police Department and the Department of Justice conducted a scene examination.

Investigators determined that Nichols had shot and killed Mateo with a handgun. Nichols was arrested and booked into the Butte County Jail on a murder charge with bail set at $1 million. The couple’s two-year-old child was in the apartment during the incident but was unharmed and placed into protective services.
