Aaron Rooster Lucio, 26, was shot on the night of October 24, 2020, in Watsonville, California. Around 9:30 p.m. officers found him at the intersection of Main Street and Pennsylvania Drive; he was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead. That same night saw at least two other shootings in the city, but investigators later determined the Pennsylvania Drive killing was not connected to the other incidents.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office publicly identified Lucio in the days after the shooting and described detectives continuing to work the case. A multi-agency team, the Santa Cruz County Anti-Crime Team, assisted the investigation. In early September 2021, police announced an arrest: 22-year-old Julio Sanchez, already jailed on an unrelated matter, was said to have confessed and was arraigned on a murder charge.
