Sereinat’e Henderson was 19 when she was killed in a drive-by shooting on the evening of October 21, 2020, in Berkeley, California. She was driving through the intersection of Prince and Ellis Streets with family, including her 1-year-old son, when the vehicle was struck by multiple bullets. Henderson was critically injured, taken to hospital, and died of her wounds; she was two months pregnant at the time.
After an investigation that used electronic and forensic evidence and involved multiple search warrants and coordination with the District Attorney’s Office, detectives identified a suspect. A 21-year-old man was arrested on January 24, 2022, while already in custody at Santa Rita Jail for a separate Berkeley gang-related shooting. The Alameda County District Attorney charged him with murder and several related felonies and enhancements.
In January 2024 the suspect, identified as Charles Jones, accepted a plea to manslaughter with a firearm enhancement and received a 21-year prison sentence with credit for time served; the family expressed that the sentence felt insufficient. The city offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.
Does anyone have memories of Sereinat’e or information about that intersection on October 21, 2020?
