Joshua Mena, 39, was shot on the night of July 26, 2020, in Burbank, California. Officers responding to reports of shots fired around 10:49 p.m. found Mena in the driver’s seat of his car after it had crashed into a nearby building at the Gulf station at 8458 S. Cicero Avenue. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and died two days later.
Police identified 18-year-old Andrew Elam of Hometown as the primary suspect. Elam was seen in the gas station parking lot and was accused of shooting Mena multiple times after the two exchanged words. Surveillance footage and several eyewitnesses were reported to corroborate the sequence of events. Elam was arrested July 28, 2020, in Hickory Hills and charged with one felony count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon; bail was set at $500,000. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office declined to file murder charges, citing insufficient evidence to meet the burden of proof, and the Burbank Police Department said the investigation would continue.
Are there witnesses or additional evidence that could clarify the motive or what happened that night?
