Connor Ronald Mangseth, 18, of Carlsbad, California, died on July 23, 2020, after being shot at a friend’s apartment on Caringa Way. He was described as an outdoorsy, loyal young man who enjoyed dirt biking, surfing and skateboarding and was remembered for his sense of humor and ability to find the good in everyone.

Believing the gun was empty, the girl pulled the trigger and the firearm was loaded; the bullet struck and killed Connor. Rather than calling for help, Gonzales and the girl spent about 20 minutes hiding the gun and inventing a story that involved two other gunmen.

Gonzales was charged with Accessory After the Fact and Child Endangerment. Connor’s family criticized the handling of the case and expressed anger over the plea disposition they say was offered, while continuing to honor his memory and pursue a memorial bench and awareness work.
