Calley Jean Garay, 32, of Madera, California, was fatally shot on July 14, 2020, in an attack described as domestic violence carried out by her estranged husband, Julio Garay. Calley had endured years of severe abuse, including being stabbed with a screwdriver, beaten with objects, and subjected to ongoing physical and emotional violence. She was killed while trying to protect her three young sons when Julio tracked her down at a medical appointment for the children and opened fire in front of them.

Investigators arrested Julio Garay and charged him with first-degree murder, lying in wait, assault with a semiautomatic weapon, and three counts of child abuse. The case prompted Calley’s family to pursue a $55 million government claim alleging that someone disclosed the appointment details that allowed Julio to find her. The killing also led to a legislative response in California known as Calley’s Law, focused on strengthening protections for domestic violence victims against abusers tracking shared children’s appointments.

If anyone knew Calley, her family, or has information about how her appointment details were disclosed, please come forward.
