Two teenagers were killed in what the family describes as a planned attack at their Lemon Grove home. Caira Rachel Christopher, 15, and her twin sister, Leah Sylvania Christopher, were fatally shot on April 15, 2020, at the Central Avenue residence where they lived with their mother, Joann Hoyt. The sisters were described as vibrant high school athletes who were always smiling and happy.

The shooter was Dwayne Edward Groves Jr., identified as the mother’s ex-boyfriend. He also assaulted Hoyt’s 22-year-old son with a firearm during the incident. Groves called Hoyt shortly before arriving and said he had figured things out and had a plan, a detail the family cites when calling the attack premeditated. After the shootings Groves attempted to hide in a nearby backyard but was captured with the help of a patrol helicopter.

The family has spoken about their shock and sense of betrayal. How well did the victims’ community know Caira and Leah, and does anyone have information that could shed more light on what led up to that day?
