Samantha Bentley, 16, of West Sacramento was shot and killed on January 4, 2020 near the Clarksburg Branch Line Trail just east of River City High School. Authorities said the shooting occurred during what they described as a marijuana deal gone wrong; Samantha’s family maintained she was not part of the drug scene.
Police arrested three teenagers in connection with the case. Two 16-year-old boys were taken into custody January 5, 2020 and charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, robbery, and homicide. A 16-year-old girl from Sacramento was arrested January 6 and charged as an accessory to a crime.
Family members and the community mourned Samantha’s death, holding vigils and candlelight gatherings. Her grandfather, Mark Bentley, urged prosecutors to try those responsible as adults. Does anyone have information about Samantha’s movements that day or witnessed activity near the trail?
