Gaylen Lee, a 70-year-old elder of the Mono Indian tribe and an author, was shot and killed at his home on Cascadel Drive in North Fork, California, on July 6, 2019. The shooting followed escalating tensions with 46-year-old Robert Eugene Moye Jr., who had been living on the same property in a relative’s house and whose behavior — including racing a vehicle and nearly striking a child — reportedly sparked confrontations.

Deputies responded after a call to the Madera County Communications Center reporting a family disturbance and multiple shots fired; Lee was found shot and Moye was arrested at the scene. Moye was charged with murder, attempted murder and additional offenses including possession of an assault weapon and operating an illegal marijuana grow. His initial bond was set at $3.75 million and he was held without bail at the Madera County Jail.

Lee was a respected community leader known for preserving Mono history and culture; his death deeply affected the North Fork community and the Tribal Council expressed profound sorrow. Does anyone have information about Lee’s work in the community or the events leading up to that night?
