Nina Silver, 20, was killed in a drive-by shooting during a house party in La Jolla on June 23, 2019. The shooting happened about 12:30 a.m. in the 7500 block of Cuvier Street. Witnesses reported a light-colored sedan drove by an alley where a group of people were standing; an occupant fired into the group. Nina was struck in the back. Three other people were wounded, with gunshot injuries to the face, chest and arm.
Authorities described the attack as gang-related and said Nina was not the intended target. Two men, Odyssey Sellers Carrillo and Malik Joshua Campbell, were later arrested and charged with multiple counts, including voluntary manslaughter, attempted murder and assault with a semi-automatic firearm. Prosecutors alleged gang motivation; both defendants pleaded guilty. Carrillo received a 35-year state prison sentence and Campbell received 24 years.
Nina had graduated from Poway High School and was planning to move to New York to attend NYU and work with troubled youth. Her family and friends held a candlelight vigil after her death. If anyone knew Nina or has information about that night, please share what you know.
