Matthew Rios, 30, was shot and killed on Interstate 680 near the Landess Avenue exit on June 17, 2019. He was driving home from work when he was found unresponsive in his car and was pronounced dead at the scene. Rios had lived in Milpitas for more than a decade, loved cooking, and planned to move to the Philippines to marry his fiancée.
Investigators identified 26-year-old Kevin Anthony Alaniz, a Milpitas resident, as the prime suspect. Alaniz was later located hiding in Big Sur and was fatally shot by park rangers on June 27, 2019, after he fired a handgun at hikers. Alaniz was the son of Rios’s mother’s fiancé. The motive for the freeway shooting remains unclear and the investigation was ongoing.
If anyone knew Matthew, his routines, or saw anything on Interstate 680 around Landess Avenue on June 17, 2019, please share information that might help fill gaps in the timeline.
