On the night of May 26, 2019, 18-year-old Taevonne Latimer was fatally shot in Arcata, California, just before 10 p.m. Latimer and friends had arranged a marijuana sale through Snapchat near Foster Avenue and Alliance Road when a dispute over the money and drugs turned violent. During the altercation, then-16-year-old Logan Rain Brewer-Hearst pulled out a gun and shot Latimer multiple times in the torso. Latimer was found in the back seat of a vehicle, taken to Mad River Community Hospital, and pronounced dead.
Another 18-year-old, Daylyn Prudhomme, was shot in the leg and survived. Brewer-Hearst surrendered to police on May 28, 2019, and was charged with involuntary manslaughter, use of a firearm, and assault with a deadly weapon. He was processed in the juvenile system and received a combined 15-year term in the California Division of Juvenile Justice, comprised of four years for involuntary manslaughter, ten years for using a firearm, and one year for assaulting Prudhomme; under California juvenile law, incarceration may end earlier, at age 25 or upon rehabilitation. Latimer was a high school senior from Eureka; his death occurred weeks before graduation and deeply affected his family and community.
