Calvin Kelley, 43, a Berkeley resident known for spending his days at People’s Park playing chess and dominoes, was shot in the back of the head on April 26, 2019, while seated at a picnic table. The shooting occurred about 2:45 p.m.; Kelley died later that evening. The attack was the first murder in the park’s roughly 50-year history and deeply affected the local community; friends and family held a vigil at the site.
Authorities identified 43-year-old Stefon Jefferson as the suspect. Jefferson was linked to a violent rampage that day that also left Marcus Jackson, 57, dead in North Oakland and Laron Davis, 49, dead in San Francisco. Jefferson was arrested that night in Douglas County, Nevada, and faced multiple charges there related to the arrest, a stolen 2015 Toyota Corolla taken from Jackson, and alleged attempts to evade police. Investigators in Berkeley and Nevada coordinated on the timeline for addressing charges in each jurisdiction.
If anyone knew Calvin or witnessed what happened in People’s Park that afternoon, please share any information that could help fill gaps in the timeline.
