Jacob Montgomery, 19, of Palm Springs, California, was one of four people found shot dead inside a crashed car on El Placer Road on February 3, 2019. The victims were identified as Jacob Montgomery, Juan Duarte-Raya, Yuliana Garcia, and Carlos Campos-Rivera. Authorities say the group had driven to meet Campos-Rivera outside his apartment complex; Jose Vladimir Larin Garcia, who had been riding with three of the victims, shot Campos-Rivera twice, including a fatal shot to the head, and the vehicle then drove away. Multiple gunshots were heard before the car crashed. Montgomery, Duarte-Raya, and Yuliana Garcia were found inside the vehicle with targeted gunshot wounds to the head. Larin Garcia was found hiding under a nearby truck, covered in blood and appearing intoxicated.
Larin Garcia was arrested and charged with four counts of first-degree murder. Court proceedings included a retrial after a jury deadlocked; he was later convicted of the murders and sentenced to death. Family members testified about their grief during the trial, and prosecutors presented evidence they say showed attempts to flee, including shaving his head and buying a bus ticket to Florida under a false name. Jacob Montgomery is remembered by family and friends as a joyful, caring person who is deeply missed.
