Kioka Shay Colbert, 26, was shot and killed on December 28, 2018, in the Florence-Firestone area of Los Angeles. The shooting happened about 10:30 p.m. on the 1100 block of East 89th Street while Colbert stood outside a car talking to two people seated inside. A man approached, asked whether she was affiliated with a gang, and then opened fire without waiting for an answer. Colbert was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:44 p.m.; the two people in the car survived their injuries.
Police identified 29-year-old Darrell Sherman as the suspect. He fled but was taken into custody shortly afterward near South Hooper Avenue and 83rd Street. Sherman was charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle, and being a felon in possession of a firearm, along with gang and gun allegations. He pleaded not guilty and had a court date set for February 13, 2019. Authorities described the shooting as gang-related and said Sherman allegedly targeted Colbert because he mistakenly believed she belonged to a gang.
