Ronil Singh was a 33-year-old police officer with the Newman Police Department who was shot and killed on December 26, 2018, while conducting a traffic stop of a suspected drunk driver. Singh, born in Fiji and having moved to the United States in 2003, had served with Newman PD since 2011.
The suspect fled after the shooting, triggering a manhunt that ended 55 hours later with an arrest in Bakersfield. The person arrested was identified as Paulo Virgen Mendoza, an undocumented immigrant who reportedly had prior DUI arrests and outstanding warrants for failing to appear in court. Mendoza was charged in connection with Singh’s killing, and a mental health evaluation found him fit to stand trial.
The case received national political attention and deeply affected the small community of Newman, where colleagues and residents continue to remember Singh’s service. Does anyone have information about Singh’s last shift or witnessed the traffic stop that morning?
