Anthony Joseph Calderone, 47, of Trinity County was found dead December 7, 2018, in Dinsmore, California. Deputies who responded to a reported car crash discovered Calderone inside a pickup near mile marker 43 on State Route 36, bleeding from the head; the truck showed crash damage and a second vehicle possibly involved was later located on Van Duzen Road near Alton. Calderone was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead. An investigation determined he had suffered a gunshot wound to the head and the case was treated as a homicide.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office conducted a multi-year investigation. On March 22, 2023, authorities arrested 38-year-old Matthew Gabriel Susmilch at the Mendocino County Jail on a Ramey warrant and booked him on suspicion of Calderone’s murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm; Susmilch had been in custody on unrelated charges at the time. The case remains open as proceedings continue.
If anyone has information about Calderone, the vehicles, or movements in the Dinsmore–Van Duzen area on December 7, 2018, please come forward.
