Nathan Lamont Hill, 52, was killed in a shooting at the Helen Vine Recovery Center in San Rafael on November 5, 2018. The attack happened in the early morning, about 1:30 a.m., while patients were asleep. Hill was an employee at the center and one of three victims; two others, employee Anthony Dominguez Mansapit, 32, and resident Brittney Kehaulani McCann, 30, suffered life-threatening injuries.
Police arrested 37-year-old Davance Lamar Reed later that morning after a highway pursuit in which a Hyundai Elantra ran over a spike strip. Authorities say Reed made admissions in jail that tied him to the shooting. He was charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and related offenses including domestic violence, vehicle theft, recklessly evading police, and possession of a semi-automatic firearm by a felon. The jury found Reed guilty of all charges and concluded he was legally sane during the attack.
The verdict was described as bringing some measure of closure for victims and staff at the recovery center.
