Victor Barrientos Jr, 29, was shot and killed on October 13, 2018, at the intersection of Astral Drive and Burline Street in Rancho Cordova, California. Family members say he had been hanging up yard-sale signs when a man approached and told him not to post signs in that area. Barrientos drove off but was pursued; he was later found in the street with an upper-body gunshot wound and died of his injuries.
Mathew Shaffer was arrested and charged with Barrientos’ murder. Shaffer, who has schizophrenia, told authorities a pickup truck had struck him and two friends while they were walking and that someone in the truck had pulled a gun and threatened him; he said he did not remember anyone shooting and denied owning a gun. Court records show prior legal issues for Shaffer, including a dismissed assault-with-a-firearm charge in 2005 and a no-contest plea to attempted robbery that same year.
Barrientos worked in construction and landscaping and was the family’s primary breadwinner; he and his wife had three children, ages 2, 7, and 9. A GoFundMe was set up to support the family. Did anyone in the Rancho Cordova area see the pickup truck or the confrontation near Astral Drive and Burline Street on October 13, 2018?
