On August 12, 2018, 9-month-old Jason Garcia Perez of Clearlake, California, was fatally shot while riding in the family SUV. Jason and two of his siblings were shot by their father, who had a recorded history of legal problems including failure to register as a sex offender and a recent charge of spousal battery.

Investigators noted the father had been charged with spousal battery about five months before the shootings, a charge that legally prohibited him from possessing firearms. Despite that restriction, he obtained a gun and used it during the incident that killed Jason and his siblings. There are no arrests or prosecutions arising from the case because the person who shot them did not survive.

The deaths exposed concerns about enforcement gaps in gun restrictions for people with domestic violence histories and raised questions about protections for families at risk. If anyone knew the family or has additional information about the circumstances leading up to August 12, 2018, please share what is known.
