Gary Smith, 46, of Olympic Valley, California, was reported missing in July 2018. His body was later found dismembered and decomposed; a forensic pathologist determined Smith died of a gunshot wound to the head from a .22 caliber handgun. The state of the remains made precise reconstruction of the circumstances difficult, but the death was ruled a homicide.
Investigators arrested 67-year-old Roger Johnson, owner of the property where Smith had been living. Police allege Johnson shot Smith through a locked and closed door after an argument. Johnson’s account reportedly changed during interviews and he blamed other occupants of the property; authorities say his statements were inconsistent.
The prosecution relied in part on testimony from Billy Silks, who admitted helping dispose of Smith’s body and cooperated with investigators. Smith’s family said he struggled with drugs but was remembered as kind and helpful. Does anyone have information about Smith’s time in Olympic Valley or about the people who lived on that property?
