Raphael Fuentes-Lee, 23 and a Vallejo resident, was found dead on April 29, 2018, on a bench along the Ohlone Greenway in Albany, California. He suffered a single gunshot wound to the head and was taken to Highland Hospital, where he died shortly after arrival. The discovery happened around 11:30 a.m.

Two people were identified and arrested after witness accounts and community tips. Kayla Gibson-Wytch, 21, of Berkeley, was taken into custody the morning after the shooting; Thomas Shimamura, 31, of Oakland, was arrested later that same day in Berkeley. Both were initially booked on murder charges. Shimamura later pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter, admitted possessing an unregistered loaded firearm and using it during the incident, and was sentenced on July 17, 2019, to 19 years in state prison (six years for voluntary manslaughter, ten years for using a gun, three years for having an unregistered firearm). The motive was not disclosed during the proceedings. Gibson-Wytch was present according to witnesses and appears not to have been charged by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.

This was the first homicide reported in Albany since 2015. Does anyone have information about Raphael’s movements along the Ohlone Greenway that morning or saw something that could clarify what happened?
