Javier Gomez Montalvo, 35, was shot dead on November 23, 2017, inside a home on Date Street in Orland, California after police responded to reports of gunfire. Officers found Montalvo deceased from gunshot wounds; a 19-year-old man was also wounded and taken to Enloe Medical Center in Chico.
Two brothers, Ricardo Garcia, 25, and Fernando Garcia, 20, were arrested after a search of nearby orchards and yards turned up several firearms. Both men were charged with first-degree murder in Montalvo’s death and attempted murder for the shooting of the 19-year-old; they entered not guilty pleas and remained in custody as the case moved through the courts.
Investigators suggested the shooting may have involved members of the same criminal street gang, but it has not been definitively established whether the killing was gang-related. Does anyone have information about that night or about Montalvo’s movements in Orland that could help clarify what happened?
