Danny Lee Elliott, 38, was shot and killed on November 14, 2017, in Rancho Tehama Reserve, a rural community in Tehama County, California. The attack was part of a wider shooting rampage carried out by a neighbor, Kevin Janson Neal, who had prior disputes with Elliott. Neal also killed his wife, Barbara Ann Gilsan, whose body was later found hidden under the floorboards of their home.
Neal entered Elliott’s home and fatally shot both Elliott and his mother, Diana Lee Steele, 68, before continuing attacks across the community. The spree left five people dead and at least eight others wounded, including Michelle Iris McFadyen, 55, and Joseph Edward McHugh III, 56, and also involved shootings at the local elementary school. The rampage ended when Neal was fatally shot by law enforcement.
Elliott is remembered as a devoted father to his young son, Gage. The case prompted community debate about gun access and mental health after reports that Neal had a history of violent behavior and mental illness and had clashed with neighbors.
