Richard Dennis Falk, 68, was found dead outside his rural home in the Buck Mountain area of Bridgeville, Humboldt County, California, on October 6, 2017. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office treated the case as a homicide after an autopsy determined Falk died from multiple gunshot wounds, with two bullets to the head and two to the chest.
Investigators arrested 17-year-old Duane Dean Gillespie of Dinsmore, identified as Falk’s former foster son, on charges that included first-degree murder, carjacking, robbery and burglary. Court records allege Gillespie used Falk’s rifle to shoot him, then stole Falk’s credit cards and Jeep, and used the cards to withdraw about $1,100 from ATMs in Eureka and Fortuna. A witness at trial testified she saw Gillespie pull a gun on Falk, create a distraction by tossing trash cans and cutting water pipes, and later take Falk’s wallet, credit cards and car keys.
Gillespie’s troubled upbringing and history of instability were noted during the proceedings, and Falk’s family said the outcome left them dissatisfied. Does anyone have further information about Falk’s life in Bridgeville or details that might shed light on the case?
