Desiree Austin was 16 and a sophomore at Selma High School when she was shot and killed outside a friend’s home in Selma, California, on August 31, 2017. She was with a group of friends when a dark-colored SUV pulled up and occupants fired at least seven rounds. Witnesses say people ducked and scattered; several fled the scene.
Paramedics at first thought Desiree had only a superficial arm wound, but hospital examination showed a more serious torso wound that proved fatal. Detectives believe a small-caliber weapon was used, which contributed to the initial underestimation of her injuries. Police have spoken to multiple witnesses but report few solid leads and have asked anyone who left the scene to come forward.
Desiree’s family and friends described her as a bright student with a promising future. Selma High School provided grief counselors, and the family has a GoFundMe to help Desiree’s single mother with funeral and related expenses. Does anyone have information about that night or remember seeing a dark-colored SUV near the location on August 31, 2017?
