Roxann Acosta, 28, of Montebello, California, was fatally shot inside an apartment on West Victoria Avenue on August 6, 2017. Officers found her about 9:56 p.m. with a single gunshot wound; she was pronounced dead at the scene. Roxann was a mother of three and was eight weeks pregnant with her fourth child.

The primary suspect named in the killing was her estranged husband, Christopher Diaz. Roxann had filed for divorce and was in a new relationship, which reportedly angered Diaz. On the day of the shooting Roxann and Diaz spent time together and later were at Diaz’s mother’s house, where an argument occurred. Witnesses heard gunshots and Diaz fled; no weapons were found at the scene.

Diaz remained at large for nearly two weeks while police had him under surveillance. On August 18, 2017, during an attempted apprehension he fled from a car, allegedly pointed a gun at officers, and was shot and killed in the resulting officer-involved shooting. Family members reported a history of domestic violence between Roxann and Diaz; the family held vigils and set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs.
